Just as good as Laskiaispulla, and the only way to celebrate the start of Lent.

Project Steve

For all the bioinformaticians called Steve / Stephen / Stevie / whatever out there – Sini gave me a great hint for something different, please check this out!

Project Steve is for the 1% of people out there whose parents embued them with the attributes of Steve… A burden at times, but the NCSE provides a neat way for us to wear our names with pride! If you support ID / creationism or a single omnipotent god then you should move on quickly (and quietly please).

A blast from the past, and something that I have blogged before (in a far-off and distant parallel universe) about the delights of working as a foreigner in a smaller country that is historically introspective, and perhaps not completely aware of the outside world! Anyhow, I hope that this post is at least as enjoyed as the bovine alternative.

Automotive angst and anger

Not much to do with bioinformatics, but I like to think of Saab as the bioinformatician’s car … A little different. Anyhow the corporate twats at GM are royally ballsing things up at the moment and the future of this smaller esoteric car company is looking rather iffy. I will never buy a GM product again; how management can get things so wrong (without beibg a banker) beggars belief!

off on holiday

Monday, February 16th, 2009

I’m heading out-of-office for a few days. I’m taking a break with the 2 eldest kids and we’re off to the UK for a break, museums, and some culture! I guess that the bioinformaticsblog will be untouched during this time, though I may add a few pictures through ShoZu.

Amazing business acronymns

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Whilst in a really interesting largely clinically oriented meeting and I have been bombarded with bizarre acronymns; CDP, CRO, CSL etc. I am now introducing BTP. A Bioinformatically Tractable Problem; something that can be achieved through data-mining but not through biostatistics!

Bioinformatics tutorials and ‘R/Bioconductor’

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

A check of the server logs shows that yesterday was a good day for traffic and users – I am hoping that some of the more trivial aspects of life are appealing, whilst perhaps more serious reviews and the objective slaughter of manusripts that miss-the-mark is more valuable (for all of us).

The logs show that many people are stumbling across the blog by searching for “Bioinformatics R tutorials”. Welcome, but my humblest apologies, I am not sure that this is something that I am willing to provide! If you could comment as to the tutorials that you would like to see that are not already packaged within a book, then please leave a comment, and perhaps we can start a panel of tutorials for new R users?

If you are looking for inspiration, assistance and to learn a whole lot more about R in bioinformatics then I would highly recommend that you attend the BioC 2009 meeting – I have been there in 2007/2008 and hope to be there this year too.

cow piss cola …

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

This is real web-whoring and trying to pull in some traffic, but still, almost 11pm now and I’ll be up at 0520 to catch the early train to the big smoke! I saw an article in the Torygraph. a rather conservative English newspapera bout cow piss cola. Pretty amoozing!
